Stockton Astronomical Society presents:
Novosibirsk: A Total Solar Eclipse - and How Not to Get There
Who wouldn't jump at the chance to view a total solar eclipse? Throw in the opportunity to fulfill a long-held ambition to ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway and you have an irresistible vacation for an astronomer/adventurer.
Our own Rick Mielbrecht recently traveled to Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia, to observe the solar eclipse. He said the eclipse was amazing, yet the journey was nearly unbearable. He will never lose his sense of awe and wonder at watching the Sun vanish from the sky, yet he cannot fathom what inspired him to ride on that Guantanamo Bay of a railway.
For our November program, Rick will extol the wonders of the eclipse in Siberia, and fill us in on the perils of getting there and back. Besides being a superlative teacher of Astronomy, Rick also has a gift for telling a great story. I am eager to hear this tale.
